Know Who’s Showing Up to Your Home Before They Get There
Cornerstone Home Defense is locally owned and operated in Charlotte and Fort Mill by people who build homes, sell homes, and started a pest control company because they were tired of watching the industry rush through the job. No quickies.
You’re letting someone into your house. That matters. And most of the time, you have no idea who’s showing up until they’re standing on your porch. Cornerstone was started by two business partners who’ve spent the last 15 years building and selling homes across the Charlotte metro - and who kept hearing the same thing from buyers, sellers, and neighbors: the pest control company showed up for ten minutes, sprayed something around the foundation, and left without ever stepping inside. We started this company because we think you deserve more than that. A team that shows up, takes the time, actually comes into your home, and doesn’t leave until the work is done right.

Why Two Home Builders Started a Pest Control Company
Tony Hanson and Lucas Mudrey have been business partners for over a decade. Together, they run a top-10 Charlotte real estate brokerage and a home building company with projects ranging from first-time buyer communities to custom lakefront homes. Between those two businesses, their team handled over 2,100 closings last year alone.
When you build homes for a living, you see where things go wrong, and how much damage pests and moisture do when nobody’s paying attention. Termite damage discovered during a closing. Crawl spaces full of standing moisture that went unchecked for years. Quarterly pest plans where the technician never stepped foot inside the house. They saw it over and over, across hundreds of transactions.
So they built a pest control company the same way they build homes: with a defined process, with people who care about the outcome, and with the understanding that cutting corners doesn’t save anybody anything in the long run. Lucas also brings a corporate law background from his years at Thomson Reuters - which means the contracts are clear, the communication is direct, and the business side runs the way it should.

50+ Years in the Industry, Not Behind a Desk
The team we’ve assembled brings over 50 years of combined pest control knowledge. That’s not corporate tenure - it’s time spent in crawl spaces, under homes, on ladders, and in attics across the Charlotte metro area. We hold North and South Carolina pesticide licenses, North and South Carolina contractor’s licenses, and a law degree. Not a typical pest control company, and that’s the point.
We’re not a franchise. There’s no regional headquarters making decisions for us. When you call or text, you reach someone who lives and works in the same neighborhoods you do - someone who can answer your question, get you on the schedule, and follow up after the work is done.
What “No Quickies” Actually Means
It started as an inside joke during our first team meeting and it stuck, because it says exactly what we mean. We’re not here to hit 20 stops a day and race a clock. We’re here to do the work right, take the time it takes, and treat your home the way we’d want ours treated.
That means our technicians don’t leave when a scheduling system tells them to, they leave when the job is actually finished. It means when you call, you get a real person, not a recording that loops through six options before disconnecting. It means we’ll tell you what we’re finding, what we’re treating, and what to watch for afterward, because it’s your home and you should know what’s happening in it. And if the problem comes back, so do we. We don’t consider a job done until the issue you called us about is actually gone.
It’s not complicated. It’s just not how most of the industry works anymore.

Giving Back Beyond the Property Line
Tony and Lucas founded Global Construction Ministries, a nonprofit that builds churches, activity centers, and hospitals in developing nations across Africa, India, and Indonesia. That work shapes how they approach everything, including pest control. When you run a company that spends part of its year building schools in communities that need them, you tend to take the rest of the work a little more seriously, too.
Closer to home, Cornerstone sponsors local events in Baxter Village and is an active member of both the North Carolina and South Carolina Pest Control Associations. We live here, we work here, and we’re invested in the same communities we serve.
